-
Excavation of the driveway commences
-
Excavation continues to a depth that will allow enough materials to be laid to ensure a strong driveway
-
Excavation includes preparing for installation of drainage
-
String lines are set up to outline the new shape and height of the driveway, ready for brick edging
-
Sometimes star pickets are put into the ground under the brick edging foundation, to prevent the brick edging from moving
-
Brick edging is laid on a thick 100 mm foundation which extends outwards at an angle and rises half way up the back of the bricks to provide strength
-
The brick edging grout includes a hardener for extra strength (inside aspect of bricks pictured)
-
The driveway is now ready for crushed rock
-
Adequate drainage is installed where required and crushed rock is laid, then levelled with a straight edge
-
The crushed rock is compacted; on some steep driveways emulsion (black sticky tar-like material) is applied to the base to prevent the asphalt from sliding when it is laid
-
The asphalt is levelled and compacted to the height of the brick edging
